Liero has created a Sound Modification for Kohan II that changes some of the sounds in the game like the battle, taunts, warnings, spells, death and voices.

From Liero:

This file will modify only sounds and will not change any other feature in the game.

I made this mod for 3 reasons:
- Give a fresh breath for the game, specially to veteran players who want a new feeling;
- Give some events like the Dispell Magic a more distinctive sound so the player will be more aware when it is used;
- Change the sounds of weapon's clash to a more adept sound (like the knives of the pilgrin making knife sound instead of club sound Wink

Excist has released the KoW Community Patch 1.2.3.1 with the purpose of "modifying siege to bring it in line with cost and field effectiveness so that we can get rid of the artifiical limit on siege numbers."

I am working to get this included with Niarg's Kohan2 Launcher, but until then you can download the mod here and manually extract it to your My Documents/Kohan2/data folder.

Update: Oct. 30: Niarg's launcher is now set up to download the community patch. Just use the update feature.

Thanks for the retrospective Kieron, from some of the devs. 3 years later, theres still nothing in the RTS genre like what we tried to make with Kohan 2. Its nice to see that while it might have taken awhile, players did understand what we were trying to do not just with Kohan 2, but the RTS genre as a whole.

Jon Amikar found an interesting article by Kieron Gillen, a writer for PC Gamer UK, entitled Retrospective: Kohan II: Kings of War. Kieron Gillen writes about his initial impressions of the game and what it is like coming back to the game years after its release. Back in 2004, he reviewed KoW for eurogamer.net, giving the game a 7 out of 10.

Since some have been unable to get Niarg's launcher to work, I thought it worth reminding you that while meant to make it easy to play mods it is not necessary. You can still play a mod by installing it manually:

1) create a data folder in your My Documents\Kohan2 folder (so My Documents\Kohan2\data)

2) put the unzipped mod inside the data folder. So inside the data folder you would have all sorts of folders like units, AI, etc. Make sure you do not have them nested in a folder with the mod name. In other words do NOT do this:

My Documents\Kohan2\data\FlavourMod\

Alternately you can unzip mods into the Kohan2 directory and just rename whichever one you wish to play at that time to data.

On and unrelated note, someone mistakenly thought that you had to buy a sub.scription to FilePlanet to download files from The Awakening. This is completely untrue. Yes, you need to register but that is free. As long as I run this site you will never have to pay for these files. If for some reason you are adverse to registering for free and you really want a certain file, you can always email me at chimaeros@strategyplanet.com to send it to you. There really is no downside to registering though...on the plus side you can get access to numerous betas.

Niarg has released a new version of his KoW Mod Launcher:

"Ok, here it is, new, improved and even easier to use, just download and run the executable or just run straight from the site."

The Launcher is an exe file that when run allows you to choose between two included mods: Flavour and Community. It also has the ability to check here for updates. Just double-click the .exe to install and then to run you can use the new Launcher icon shortcut to run a mod or use the original K2 shortcut to run an unmodded game.

I noticed that one of the reasons given for the lack of mods played is how hard it was to use them, so I decided to make a mod launcher that could be used on any system and was incredibly easy to install.

All you have to do is download and unzip it, then double click on install. The mod launcher icon should then end up on the desktop and you can either use that if you want to play a mod, or just use the usual K2 shortcut if you don't want to use a mod.

The disadvantages are that you can only use it to launch one of two mods, I've included Rakos mod that he completed recently as the flavour mod and the equal balance mod that Ashtaka did a while back as the community mod.

It's not completely finished yet but I want to release it now for two reasons:
1) Check that it works on all systems.
2) See who is interested in making/playing a community mod ala KAG to help out with some of the balance issues.

Thoughts and problems wanted.


He is also looking for answers to the following poll question: Would you like to see a community mod done to attempt to fix balance issues?
